Chapter 13: The Tech Toolkit
Using Technology to Manage Technology
The rules are good. The conversation went well. The child even agreed. Then, five minutes later, a notification pings from somewhere upstairs. An old iPod still on Wi-Fi. A smartwatch nobody thought to lock down. This is the moment parents realise that willpower alone cannot hold a boundary inside a home designed to bypass it. The fix lies elsewhere. It is in reclaiming the role nobody told them they already had: administrator of the household network.
This chapter is the practical infrastructure chapter. It takes the B.A.S.E. framework introduced in Chapter 12 and shows parents how to use technology itself to hold those boundaries automatically. Most of the tools already exist on the devices in the house. Most parents have never been walked through how to use them properly. This chapter is the walk-through.
The checklist is organised around the same promise as the free Digital Safety Checklist: 10 essential areas and 80 practical controls across the screens, settings, routines and conversations in the home. It walks through every device, console, forgotten screen and online loophole, then connects the technical checks to sleep routines, family agreements and calm conversations.

What the chapter covers
The chapter assumes no prior technical confidence. The checklist covers 10 essential areas and 80 practical controls in plain steps a parent can follow on a phone in one sitting.
- How to audit every device, console, forgotten screen and online loophole.
- How to work through router settings, device controls, sleep routines and family agreements.
- How to configure Apple Screen Time, Google Family Link, console controls and app download limits.
- How to set up a central charging station and bedroom-free sleep routine.
- How to use the practical checks alongside the conversations that keep trust intact.
- How to anticipate workarounds such as VPNs, mobile data and friends’ devices with calm scripted responses.
Using tools with wisdom
The chapter shifts the parent’s role from moment-to-moment enforcer to network administrator. The router cuts the Wi-Fi at nine. The app blocks the platform automatically. The charging station holds the line so the parent can focus on connection.
After reading it, the parent has a working set of tools rather than a working set of arguments. The technology starts doing the holding.
