Preface
A Parent’s Journey from Unease to Understanding
Profound disconnection has quietly been rebranded as modern family life. Beneath the daily routine, many of us carry a quiet unease that rarely gets spoken aloud. What looks like ordinary life is slowly reshaping our children's developing minds and weakening the close bonds we long for. When screens are left fully unattended, the distractions and addictions they bring can cause family life to unravel in ways we never expected.
This book begins exactly where we are. It gives that unease a shape, a language, and a practical way forward. In these pages I share my own journey from business owner to full-time parent. I began researching because I needed to understand what I was seeing, and the convictions that grew from watching family life shift around us. The good news is that there are real answers and a hopeful way out.
Above all, it offers warm permission to move forward without the heavy guilt that so often holds us back.

What the chapter covers
The preface is a parent-to-parent invitation, the author’s stance, the moments that brought her to this work, and the principles that anchor everything that follows.
- Why the real digital crisis is the silent, normalised disconnection that makes engaged parents look like the problem.
- The author’s path from observer to participant, and the near-miss with one of her own children that turned a worry into a vocation.
- Why traditional parenting wisdom around boundaries, boredom, struggle and parental authority is treated as counter-cultural today, and why each one still matters.
- How testing behaviour and anxiety in a child often signal a missing, consistently held limit.
- Why boredom is reframed as the fertile ground for creativity, self-discovery and independence.
- How a parent’s own digital habits quietly sabotage their authority, and why behaviour change has to start with the adult in the room.
- Why it is never too late, even with older children or with habits that feel entrenched.
- The book’s three-part structure: knowledge, urgency, and tools.
Where the journey begins
There is a kind of loneliness that comes from worrying about something the wider culture seems to have accepted as normal. The preface is written to put that loneliness down. Parents are not alone in this. They are responding to a real shift that most families are quietly contending with at the same time.
By the end, the preface has done two things. It names the author’s stance as a fellow parent, and it sets out exactly what each part of the book will deliver. Everything that follows is built on this foundation.
